Are you a person with a disability? Does someone in your family or a friend have a disability?
Is there a problem caused by the disability or the way other people react to it?
For example;
- not getting help with every day things that may be harder to do because of the disability, such as looking after the house, being clean, cooking and eating, travelling to shops or friends, going to school, getting the right doctor, managing your money;
- other people deciding what should happen without listening to the person who has the disability and their family;
- being treated unfairly compared to people who do not have disabilities;
- not knowing where to look for help.
A MALSSA advocate may be able to help you speak and be heard.
MALSSA advocates listen when you tell them what is happening to you, help you decide what you want to change and how to change it, then help you make the change.
Advocates can help you by showing you how to speak up more effectively and helping you find the people you need to talk to.
Advocates can come with you to talk to decision makers.
Advocates can speak for you after you and the advocate have agreed what is to be said.
MALSSA advocates are good at helping people with disabilities and their families, especially those from other countries and people who may not speak or read English well.
MALSSA has offices in Adelaide and some other towns in South Australia. You can meet an advocate at your nearest office, or an advocate from your nearest office can arrange a place to meet you. If you do not live near an office, an advocate can help you by telephone or email.
